PLEASE HELP US TO HELP LIBBY AND MAKE A DONATION!
Libby was pulled from a high-kill shelter in Ohio where she was found as a stray. The shelter contacted us since they thought she was a nice dog. Sadly, there could NOT be more wrong with her medically- She has 2 cherry eyes, open sores on her ears from fly bites, a high grade heart murmur and - to top it off - she is in Congestive Heart Failure. She is around 1-2 yrs. old. It is clear she was neglected in her prior home as she is emaciated...weighing 80 lbs and her coat was filthy and matted. A kind vet boarded her for 2 weeks for us until we could find a foster home. She will be going to a cardiologist very soon and we will update immediately with a prognosis for this girl. She will not be ready for adoption until a full medical work up has been completed and Libby has gained weight.
If you are not able to adopt, please consider making a donation to GLMR to help with medical bills on one of these gentle giants. Giant breed dogs also come with giant vet bills. All GLMR dogs are fixed, up to date on shots and healthy when they go to their new homes, but they don't always come to us that way. GLMR does not turn away dogs for health probems! So *please* help us to help them and make a tax deductible donation to GLMR by clicking the paypal link below. Thank you in advance!
UPDATE 7-31-07:Libby has been to the cardiologist, and the results of her examination are both encouraging and heartbreaking. Congestive heart failure has begun, and she is on medication that should give her about six months of quality life (she is between one and two years old). Her only possibility for long term survival is a pacemaker. Our first quote for that procedure was for $4,000. Our second quote was for $2,000 that is including a rescue discount. Our volunteers are working frantically to help this girl. Why should we do this when there are so many other dogs that need our help? First, because we can only save them one at a time, and second, if you could meet this girl personally, you would know the answer. How this poor girl is in such poor physical condition can show the love and positive attitude that she does is nothing short of amazing. An anonymous writer once said "until one has loved an animal, part of one's soul remains unawakened". Please help us to help this poor girl. Time is critical. Not a dime is spent other than for the benefit of these dogs.
Libby returned to Purdue today 09/06/07, for evaluation of her pacemaker that was placed 5 weeks ago. While Libby was here she had radiographs, and Electrocardiogram(ECG) and her pace maker was interrogated. THe radiographs confirmed that the pacemaker lead has not migrated since surgery. Her pacemaker is working correctly as documented by her ECG. At this time Libby can act like a normal dog and be allowed to exercise and play! (three cheers for Libby!!!) Please continue to use a halter on Libby and not collars around the neck. The battery life on the pacemaker is will last for 88 months. At that time it will be necessary to change the battery (hooray for Libby needing a batter change in 7 years) Who would have thought this skinny sick little girl would be looking 7 years into the future and a bright future it appears to be!
Continue Libby on her current meds (a huge thank you to Julie and Tim and Dr Bellamy in OH for ordering and covering the cost of meds for Libby for one full year!!!)
Libby also had an opthalmolgy consult to evaluate her cherry eyes. The opthalmologist highly suggest that they be removed to make Libby more comfortable and to help prevent dry eyes, which is a complication with this condition. They recommend that the surgery be performed at PUVTH due to Libby's pacemaker and the size of her cherry eyes. (they did indicate that this would be a great case to work with students on so we are hopeful for a huge discount and Gary will be working on that with them)
They ended by saying thank you for bringing Libby to PUVTH. She is a sweet girl and a wonderful patient.
Please consider making a donation on behalf of Libby.
