On Aug 8 2008, a Mastiff named Duke was surrendered to GLMR, Duke had a broken hip, fleas, broken teeth, tumors, and was very under weight.  Duke was not going to be able to be saved. A GLMR volunteer refused to let this abuse go.  She started working, with the support of GLMR toward getting his family charged with animal cruelty.  She called animal control officer, the humane investigator, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, until she was heard.  The States Attorney for the county was also called for the area that this family lived in.  This went on for about a year.  Finally charges were filed and a court date set.

On 12/8/2009 16 months to the day, Duke had his day in court.  There were 5 different counts filed against both the husband and wife.  With the support and testimony of the Veterinarian who treated him, we testified on behave of Duke.  They were found guilty of 3 of the 5 charges.  They will receive their sentence on 12/18/09, where they will face a max penalty on 1 year in jail and a 2500.00 fine.  We’d like to see them receive the maximum verdict of course, but that is up to the judge.  This verdict will be on their record for ever, and regardless, we’re happy for the outcome.

Our job as rescuers, is NOT just to re-home dogs, but to educate, and prosecute when necessary.  To fight for Gods creatures who can't fight for themselves.  This was a long and frustrating process, but we could not let Duke down.  A promise was made to him as his suffering was ended, justice would be served..

We ask that everyone light a candle tonight in memory of Duke, to let him know his fight is over and that he can rest in peace.  Then hug every furry creature you have in your home, love them and pray that one day we as rescuers will be out of a job. Wouldn’t that be a welcome miracle?

Important to note: had our volunteer not had her paperwork filled out, and in order, we may not have been able to see this win. If ever in this situation, take pictures and make sure your t’s are crossed and your i’ s dotted.

Rest in Peace Duke.
