Stella Lynne is the real article – a dog very much in need of YOUR help! Stella is, unfortunately, a rare animal – a diabetic puppy. Sure, dogs get diabetes, but most of the time it is in the later years of their life. A veterinarian may live out his entire career without seeing a diabetic puppy such as Stella. Given her situation, Stella will have to have insulin every day of her life. Since insulin dosage is related to a dog’s weight, the better job of controlling her diabetes our foster parents perform, the more Stella gains weight and the more insulin she needs. We’re chasing a moving target here; it’s sort of like trying to pour Kool-Aide in a kid’s glass as he runs around the yard! This becomes an expensive proposition. Right now Stella uses about $5 worth of insulin a day.

A complication of juvenile diabetes in dogs is that they can develop cataracts very quickly. Stella now has cataracts and her vision is rapidly going away. How do we know? Stella is now frequently running into chairs, fences and other objects around the house and yard. When you are outside and call her she will run up to a nearby bush only to discover that you are standing 4 or 5 feet away from there.

In older dogs with cataracts and near the end of their lives, one option is to let them go blind, keeping a close eye on them and caring for them as you would a blind person. Blind dogs, fearful of running into objects or getting hurt, simply become couch potatoes. What do you think? In the case of a puppy with perhaps another 12 years of good life ahead of her, does allowing her to go blind seem like an option?

The cost of Stella’s cataract surgery is around $4000.
